Description

[SHERMAN, William T. (1820-1891)]. ALS as general, dated at Army Headquarters in Washington, 1869 and two CDV portraits from life.

One page, 5 x 7 7/8 in., creased at folds with small separations repaired on verso, verso paper reinforcement to upper and lower edges, toning. On "Headquarters Army of the United States" letterhead. Addressed to Chairman Francis D. Clark.

Sherman writes that he will be unable to attend a meeting of the "Californians" on the 24th of the month, but thanks Clark for remembering him and congratulates him on the "great progress made out there."

Ca 1864 seated portrait of Sherman as major general (evening toning, few spots to print; mount with some soiling and wear to edges/corners). Though uncredited, this pose appears to be from the same sitting as a few other known Brady portraits. Verso bears ink inscriptions "Genl. W. T. Sherman / Martha." -- Ca 1865 seated portrait of William T. Sherman as major general (multiple pinholes and spotting to print; mount with heavy spotting, lower right corner clipped, and pinhole/abrasion to upper edge). Here, Sherman is posed with his arms crossed, looking just off camera. His hair is somewhat unkempt and he wears a Lincoln mourning band on his arm and some kind of suspended badge on his coat. Recto bears Brady's copyright, and verso bears his imprint. -- Together, 2 CDVs.
